The available PTR sources disagree
Moudi’s October 25 system overview says a player can leave a tale and return to that same attempt through the Book of Shadows without losing temporary progress. A November 1 forum post by Parry reports that a return-to-story tooltip suggested this behavior, yet the instance reset after leaving. The post does not provide a confirmed cause or a developer resolution.
That evidence is enough to identify a persistence question, but not enough to promise a reliable pause button. We have not reproduced how a logout, disconnect, server restart or return from another device affects a saved attempt. Treat an unfinished run as something whose recovery you should verify on your actual build.

Three situations that should not be treated as identical
| Situation | Evidence and limitation |
|---|---|
| Leaving and rejoining the same tale | Supported by an attributed PTR overview; contradicted by one later player reset report. Current behavior needs verification. |
| Finishing or ending the attempt | The overview says temporary levels and empowerments reset at the end. That is a different event from successfully resuming an unfinished attempt. |
| Permanent village progression | Blizzard describes upgrades purchased between attempts. Losing a temporary augment does not by itself show that a permanent upgrade has vanished. |
| Disconnecting, relogging or changing devices | No reliable recovery rule for these cases was established in this source set. |
If you are checking a reset problem
Record the game build, selected tale and difficulty, whether you used a leave action or disconnected, and what the return prompt said. Compare the starting area, temporary augments and purchased village improvements separately. This is an evidence checklist for a report, not a guaranteed recovery method.
Avoid overwriting the useful details with a broad claim that “everything reset.” The difference between a new attempt, a failed resume and a missing permanent upgrade is exactly what another player or a developer needs to distinguish. The community directory links the original persistence report for comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is leaving the same as finishing a tale?
The system overview distinguishes them: it describes resuming the same attempt but resetting temporary power when the attempt ends.
Can I safely promise a teammate we can resume tomorrow?
The cited sources do not support that guarantee. Confirm the current build and the exact return option first.
Does a reset prove that Scribe upgrades are gone?
No. Temporary run power and permanent village improvements must be checked separately.
