Health and Barrier absorb damage in different ways
Health is your life pool. Barrier is an absorb that protects that pool while the shield remains. The character-panel help text says Barrier regenerates after combat; the Health help text says Health does not ordinarily regenerate passively.
This makes an out-of-combat pause valuable for a shielded character without promising a full heal. Watch the shield and the Health bar separately, especially after a Soul Ward has saved an attempt.
Recovery sources
| Source | What the PTR description establishes | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Barrier | Returns after leaving combat, based on the Barrier stat | Does not establish automatic Health regeneration |
| Healing potions | A variety of potions can restore Health | Actual potency depends on the formula and its upgrades |
| Golden Vitality Orbs | Appear briefly from defeated enemies and initially restore Health | They disappear; the Arcanist can add further benefits |
| Focus recovery | Comes from separate potion, augmentation or passive effects | Healing your Health does not by itself prove a Focus refill |
Consumables have an identification layer
Tales contain unidentified potions and scrolls. The Arcanist teaches additional identification formulas and improves consumable potency. Before identifying an item, its function may be unknown; the preview therefore has more decision-making than four permanently fixed healing buttons.
The reported action bar has four potion slots. That is a description of the PTR interface, not a guarantee that every potion found during a tale has identical storage or use rules.
Preventing a hit can be worth more than recovering it
Active Evade grants a temporary immunity window; held Guard reduces incoming damage; Sprint and double jump change your position. These tools prevent Health loss in different ways. Guard is not described as full damage immunity, and Barrier regeneration does not make standing in every attack harmless.
