Read the character panel before choosing an upgrade
The Talebound PTR character panel exposes both resource limits and defensive or offensive attributes. Several names sound interchangeable but govern different systems: Barrier protects Health, Energy fuels frequent actions, Focus pays for stronger actions, and Dodge Chance is not your active Evade button.
Character stat reference
| Stat | Meaning | What changes your decisions |
|---|---|---|
| Health | Your life pool; reaching zero causes defeat unless a Soul Ward saves you | Does not passively refill; use healing resources |
| Barrier | A shield that absorbs damage before Health | Regenerates after combat; see its amount in Character Info |
| Power | Increases attack damage | A persistent offensive upgrade target at the Outfitter |
| Energy | Fast-regenerating resource used by lightning-bolt-marked actions | Evading briefly interrupts its regeneration |
| Focus | Resource for powerful abilities; one blue pip represents 10 Focus | No ordinary passive regeneration; use consumables and relevant augments |
| Evade Charges | How many Evades your character can use | Separate from the random Dodge Chance stat |
| Guard | The damage reduction of your class’s guard action | Hold the guard action to benefit |
| Dodge Chance | A chance to nullify an incoming hit | Does not replace an actively timed Evade |
| Critical Strike Chance | How often attacks can critically strike | Distinct from the size of critical hits |
| Critical Strike Damage | How much a critical hit is amplified | Improving this does not itself increase critical frequency |
Why a missing Health refill is not necessarily a bug
The documented rules do not give Health ordinary passive regeneration. Barrier is the defensive pool that returns after combat. If the red life pool stays low while a shield returns, the two systems are behaving differently rather than both failing to heal. Potions and briefly appearing golden Vitality Orbs are the relevant healing resources.
Compare upgrades against the pool you actually run out of
More maximum Energy does not make Focus passively regenerate. More critical damage does not increase critical chance. A larger Barrier changes how much damage the shield can absorb, while a larger Health pool changes the amount of damage you can survive after the shield is gone.
These are mechanical distinctions, not a tested best-upgrade ranking. An exact efficiency comparison would also need current upgrade costs and per-rank values, which are not supplied by the preview descriptions.
